All This and More (detail). Acrylic on canvas, 122 x 183cm.

In her Sketchbook series, Sherylle exploits and expands the value of the sketchbook or journal as both a record-keeping and creative tool. Snippets from a sketchbook have been magnified on the canvas as bold, black, irregular outlines partially filled with choppy patches of boisterous colour.

Some of her compositions depict partially disintegrated and rearranged recollections of place and time, which might include abstractions of large landmarks, topographic elements, or miniature architectural details that have been exaggerated and segregated from their larger whole. These forms are often placed alongside or within other signifiers such as map lines and textual references from historic or geographic records. The final works are bold interpretations of the personal histories, lived experiences, and human connection to place.

In other works in the same series, Sherylle uses this technique to explore our place in the world through more audacious form and colour. Colourful interconnecting shapes are located in a larger field as an observation and investigation of human complexity and our relationships with ourselves and others. Smaller shapes float in the space, almost as satellites, depicting the many aspects and adaptations of ourselves as we move through the world.
