Georgina Elms Black Porcelain Vase 1987 - Applied Silver (D0540)

$625.00

This exceptional black porcelain vase was created in 1987 by Australian ceramic and metalwork artist Georgina Elms, known for her sculptural forms and her integration of precious metals into contemporary ceramics.

The vessel is wheel‑thrown in deep matte black porcelain, its surface shaped into soft, organic contours. Hugging the rim is a cluster of solid silver gumnuts and stems, each element individually cast using the ancient lost‑wax method — a labour‑intensive process traditionally reserved for fine jewellery and small‑scale sculpture. The silver components are stamped 925.

The base is signed and dated 1987, with a worn label reading “No. 6”, indicating this piece was part of a very small, possibly exhibition‑level series. Works from this period rarely appear on the secondary market, and the combination of porcelain and precious metal makes this a standout example of Elms’ practice.

A refined, sculptural object that bridges ceramics, silversmithing, and Australian botanical art — highly desirable for collectors of contemporary Australian studio ceramics.
