Stella Chavarria Blackware Pot, Santa Clara Pueblo Pottery, c1980s (D0372)

$220.00

A finely carved blackware pottery vase by Stella Chavarria (b. 1939), a respected artist from Santa Clara Pueblo and fourth-generation descendant of the legendary Tafoya–Naranjo dynasty. Stella was taught by her mother, Teresita Naranjo, and continues the tradition of deeply carved, highly polished blackware using hand-coiled clay and traditional outdoor firing techniques.

This small, sculptural piece features flowing geometric motifs carved into the upper body, with a rich, polished surface achieved through stone burnishing and fire reduction — a hallmark of Santa Clara artistry. Chavarria’s motifs represent water, mountains, and other symbolic features that connect to her ancestral stories.

Please note dimensions carefully as it can be difficult to judge size by the images.
