Oiva Toikka (1931–2019) was a legendary Finnish designer and glass artist celebrated for his imaginative flair and bold use of colour. Toikka carved out a distinctive path with whimsical, expressive creations and is most well known for his iconic Birds By Toikka series, launched in 1972. Toikka designed over 400 unique mouth blown birds, which are highly coveted by collectors. Each bird is unique and individually signed.
Originally produced in the legendary Nuutajärvi glassworks, production of his birds later transitioned to Iittala.
Beyond glass, Toikka also made significant contributions to ceramics, textiles, costume and theatre design and has received numerous prizes.
Oiva Toikka’s stunning Canadian Blue Jay is a limited edition, highly collectible glass bird, created in 2003 to honour the cultural ties between Canada and Finland. 1,500 pieces were released for the Finnish-Canadian Grand Festival, and they are highly prized find among collectors. This example is in fabulous vintage condition and comes with its original box, Iittala wrapping, and swing tag.
