Oiva Toikka (1931–2019) was a legendary Finnish designer and glass artist celebrated for his imaginative flair and bold use of colour. Toikka carved out a distinctive path with whimsical, expressive creations and is most well known for his iconic Birds By Toikka series, launched in 1972. Toikka designed over 400 unique mouth blown birds, which are highly coveted by collectors. Each bird is unique and individually signed.
Originally produced in the legendary Nuutajärvi glassworks, production of his birds later transitioned to Iittala. Beyond glass, Toikka also made significant contributions to ceramics, textiles, costume and theatre design and has received numerous art and design prizes.
Oiva Toikka’s Limited Edition Blue Magpie was created in a very small run of only 750 birds worldwide. Each bird features subtle variations in colour and markings, and this example features a stunning, translucent cobalt blue body, with a streaked white head, mottled orange beak, and opaque black tail. Standing on its own glass base/feet, this large bird is a rare find in excellent vintage condition and comes with its original box and small booklet.
