Jules Vieillard Faience Moon Flask c1860
After Jules Vieillard took the reigns of the leading pottery plant in Bordeaux, France, his designs and quality won global acclaim at the Great Exhibition of 1851. His bright, colourful, orientally-inspired faience designs were especially popular and remain prized by collectors.
This unusual moon flask is highly decorated on both sides, a painstaking process done by hand. Dominant colours are white, yellow, royal blue, turquoise, and crimson, with hints of green. One side features a water scene with cranes and yellow blossoms, and the other side is a similar scene with kingfishers and bamboo. The base, neck, and sides feature Vieillard’s Islamic-inspired decorative motifs typical of this style.
While pieces in excellent condition continue to fetch high prices in the secondary market, this example is modestly priced to reflect its fair condition and signs of use. Please see the additional information and images and please get in touch with any questions or concerns.
The flask is signed JVB (Jules Vieillard Bordeaux) in ink, and also has a factory stamp to the base.
